Portaging

This camping trip was one of the most exciting parts to my trip home. Firstly, because I haven’t gone in years and I miss the beautiful lakes in Canada and secondly it was because I just wanted to see the amazing landscapes we have in Canada that I miss deeply. Algonquin Park is about 4 hour drive from Toronto and the canoe trip to our campsite to Thompson lake was around 5 hours due to not knowing where we were going at points.

Me cutting wood like a true country girl (many people don’t know that I was raised on a farm and I am truly a farm girl)

Cutting wood was a daily task for me when I lived on the farm during winter.

Beautiful views – no where to go unless you canoe in this park.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Nope… it’s just an Aussie dude.

This is an unreal moment as I have been coming to Algonquin Park since high school and I have never seen any wildlife like bears, wolves or moose’s but they are always around in the wild and I was so lucky to finally see one while canoeing back.

Portaging is not very known and the concept is very easy… when you reach land after canoeing through various lakes in order to get to the next lake you must carry all your gear, backpack and canoe across land at designated portaging areas, until you see lake again. It can be challenging depending on how much weight you have or how long the portage is. Lucky for us we only did 1 and it was short. No one complained.

  1. Wow, I definitely missed out during my time in Toronto! Too much time spent in the bars on College & Queen.
