I asked myself, “What is foliage?” The definition is; the representation of leaves, flowers, and branches in painting and architectural ornaments. A silly question perhaps from my behalf but I had always thought of a foliage crown to be your everyday, current trend of flower headbands. Little did I realise that there is more to foliage crowns than plastic flowers, a glue gun and a headband.
Last Monday night, I went to a Foliage Crown course with my friend Alison. The class was located down a Melbourne laneway in a place called Shebeen. I don’t know what it is about Melbourne laneways but they always seem to have such an awesome vibe that inspires me and gets my creative juices flowing. I can’t help but admire them every time I wander down them and is one of the reasons why I love living in Melbourne.
It was so nice to do something different after a day at work and be around other creative people. Our host Graham was very knowledgeable about flowers, where to find them and instructing us on the best way to make our crowns. I must admit it was tricky to attach the flowers in the way you wanted. As you can see in some of the photos, some of the floral tape used to attach the flowers and leaves is still visible (whoops!).
Considering we all got the same bunch of flowers to work with, it was amazing to see so many different variations of crowns. Some were simple with very few flowers and others were made entirely out of big bunches of flowers and leaves. Fortunately we were able to take flowers home to finish our crowns because the hour class didn’t allow enough time to create such masterpieces! We were given information sheets on our way out too which had some helpful hints and a list of all the flowers and materials we used. I am looking forward to my next laneway learning class!
Aside from my floral crown-making, I have been busy setting up my own studio for my photography business. A special thanks to my friend Sarah who modelled my floral crown in the above photos.
Thanks for reading and stay tuned to upcoming photography I will be posting.
